What Is The History Of The DiSC Profile?

Throughout history, human beings have made every effort to understand human behavior.  We’re always looking for simple, effective ways to not only understand but also communicate about the mysteries of people’s behavior--describe what people do, how they do it and why they do it.

William Moulton Marston - Founder of the DiSC Profile ModelAmerican psychologist William Moulton Marston developed a theory in the early 1920’s to explain normal people’s emotional responses to various stimuli.  He created the first four-dimensional model of human behavior.  He named these four emotions: Dominance, Influence, Submission and Compliance—what we know today as D, I, S and C.  Though he devised a system to understand and describe human behavior, he never developed a DiSC profile instrument or assessment tool that would measure human behavior.  William Moulton Marston developed the descriptive categories that made a practical application of his model possible.  Marston’s model is based on two perceptions:  the environment as favorable or unfavorable and the person as more or less powerful than the environment.  His work was the foundation of the DiSC assessment that has been used by more than 50 million people since it was first introduced in 1972.

Through his research, Marston concluded there are four primary emotions leading to different behavioral responses in all people.  These emotions were discussed in depth in his book entitled: Emotions of Normal People.  Since most research had always been carried out on the mentally ill, Marston concluded it was time to study “normal” people and learn from them.  He was interested in the way normal, healthy people felt and behaved as they interacted with their environment.

He believed that a person’s behavior is influenced by their perception of the environment.  (Marston referred to the environment as everything outside of the individual person—including other people, events, circumstances, demands of a situation.)  Those perceptions of the environment and situations are more important than what those environments and situations actually are with respect to how people react to them.  Perception of an environment, people, or a situation determines the reaction to them.  Marston also noted that effective people behave according to the environment--they are able to predict the expectations or demands of the environment and to choose an appropriate response.  If we could understand how our responses adapt to other people, situations and our environment, we could become better-equipped to realize true happiness in our lives.

Walter V. ClarkeIn 1940, Walter V. Clarke, an industrial psychologist, took Marston's research and created the Activity Vector Analysis.  This tool measured how individuals saw themselves and how they believed others saw them.  Participants completed the questionnaire twice, depending on their focus.  Based on the combination of answers with different focus, he described human behavior using four factors: Aggressive, Social, Stable or Avoidant.

The year 1950 saw the completion of John Cleaver's assessment tool, the first forced-choice instrument based on Marston’s model.  This questionnaire contained 24 questions, requiring participants to choose two out of four words for each question.  They were to choose one word as being least like them and one being most like them.

Dr. John G. GeierIt was not until 1970 that the DiSC Profile began to truly take shape and become more recognizable as it is today.  Dr. John G. Geier and Dorothy Downey took Cleaver's 24-question assessment and were able to identify 15 different classical patterns in behavior.  Dr. John Geier authored the DiSC Personal Profile System (PPS) building on the work of Marston, Clarke and Cleaver.  The Personal Profile System was the first version of what is now known as the DiSC Classic Profile.

In 1984, Curt Carlson, a fellow college alumnus of Geier and Downey, purchased their company, Performax Systems International.  Approximately ten years later, the Personal Profile System was updated and revalidated, to include more modern wording used today.  In order to make it more accurate, four new groups of words were added.  The updated version of the DiSC Personal Profile System 2800, a system which encompassed 28 tetrads (a tetrad is a set of 4 words) was first published in 1994.

After Carlson's death in 2000, The Riverside Company purchased the company from Carlson Companies and soon after changed their business name to Inscape Publishing Inc.

In February 2012 John Wiley & Sons acquired Inscape Holdings and is continuing to enhance the Everything DiSC product offerings.

Because the name DISC was never trademarked originally, many companies have sought to duplicate the DISC Model or create their own versions.  This has often left people confused over what version or model they should purchase for their organization.  To be assured you are working with the original model, it is recommended that you purchase the original DiSC® Profile, the one using the lowercase “i” and the registered trademark ® after the C.

What Are DiSC Profiles?

DiSC is a personal assessment instrument that is used across the globe by over 50 million people. It is one of the most successful and widely used personal and professional development instruments.  DiSC Products are the leading edge approach to improve performance, and deal more effectively with conflict and ease frustration.  DiSC Profiles give you the chance to learn about yourself, better understand others and map ways to improved communication, fewer conflicts, top performance, career growth and personal satisfaction.  DiSC has proven to be very powerful in giving people a language to discuss their differences. Companies use it to make sure productivity at work is increased. Productivity is increased through these profiles by encouraging communication and team work.

DiSC is a personal assessment that uses no judgment on a person. Instead, it opens up ways of communicating about their differences in behavior in a non-threatening way. When you take part in a DiSC assessment, you will have to answer a series of questions or statements.  It is not a test, so there are no right or wrong answers, no good or bad results, and no DiSC style is “ideal” or better than another.  People who understand their strengths and limitations are able to adapt to the needs of others and the needs of their environment in ways that lead to maximum effectiveness.

DiSC stands for: Dominance, influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness.  A DiSC Profile is a personality profile instrument based on William Moulton Marston’s model of human behavior.  The DiSC Profile provides an in-depth look at the way people think, behave and interact.  The DiSC Profile describes how individuals behave as they respond to their environment and gives valuable insights into one’s own behavior as well as the behavior of others.  These profiles provide insight not only into a person’s motivation but also their priorities so they can better understand themselves and others.  Learning about the DiSC style of other people helps the participants understand their priorities in a way so that they can more readily adjust their response to better connect with others.  Through this assessment, employers will gain more insights about employees and potential employees; business professionals and leaders will realize their personality strengths and challenges so they can become more effective and productive in working with others in the workplace.

Understanding DiSC Profiles

There are several types of DiSC Profiles available. These include the DiSC Classic Profiles which provide the four separate DiSC styles in the traditional line-graph way and the Everything DiSC Profiles which map the DiSC styles in a circle.

DiSC Classic Profiles

Participants respond to 28 forced-choice boxes that contain four words each.  In each box they are asked to choose one word that is most like them and one that is least like them.  The report provides separate scores on four scales: D, i, S, and C. The interpretation of this graph within the profile is based on a Classical Pattern, which describes a person’s overall DiSC pattern as influenced by all four styles.  It is based upon the scores for each dimension. The DiSC Classic assessment uses Classical Patterns to capture the integrated, interactive nature of the four styles.

There are four DiSC Classic Profiles to choose from:

  • the DiSC Classic paper Profile
  • Online DiSC Classic 2.0
  • DiSC Classic 2 Plus
  • PPSS General Characteristics

Everything DiSC Profiles

Another DiSC Product that is offered is Everything DiSC. Participants are shown a series of statements and asked to indicate, on a five point scale, the degree to which they agree with each of them. The report provides the DiSC style in a circle; with dot placement and shading in the circle unique to the individual. Everything DiSC offers application layers for the DiSC model that help participants see the immediate relevance of DiSC to their field or profession. Participants don’t have to struggle to understand how DiSC relates to their goals and developmental needs.

There are SEVEN Everything DiSC Profiles to choose from:

  • Everything DiSC Workplace Profile
  • Everything DiSC Agile EQ Profile
  • Everything DiSC Productive Conflict Profile
  • Everything DiSC 363 for Leaders Profile
  • Everything DiSC Work of Leaders Profile
  • Everything DiSC Sales Profile
  • Everything Management Profile

You are able to download Sample Reports online to teach you the exact contents in terms of the various profiles.  The Everything DiSC suite of application-specific products is based on the third generation of the research-validated DiSC Assessment.  The Everything DiSC personality assessment uses adaptive testing which is an interactive assessment process that tailors questions to the individual respondent; people who respond inconsistently to any given set of items will be asked to respond to more items.  This technology provides more precision about a participant’s true DiSC style--32% more accurate than a DiSC Classic--and superior user experience.  Each profile includes in-depth information, tips, strategies, actions plans and follow-up reports to help learners become more effective.

How Can DiSC Profiles Help?

There are multiple benefits to taking part in a DiSC program. It will help you better understand why you act the way you do--what makes you tick. It is not a diagnostic tool, but a dialog tool.  You will learn better ways of responding to and dealing with conflict, but you will also learn exactly what motivates you. At the same time, the test will show you what sort of things leave you stressed out, and how you can adapt to stop this from happening. Learning to adapt to the stress can result in more successful interactions, and a more effective workplace. You will learn how to adapt your behavior to meet the needs of others. You don't have to change yourself, who you are or what you stand for, but if everybody makes a few concessions, team work and communication will be greatly improved.

Hence, the test is a means to teach you how to foster interactions in group situations that are both creative and constructive. Team work will be greatly improved and there will be far less conflict in the workplace as well. Companies routinely use DiSC to improve customer service, build productive teams, train salespeople, develop effective managers and leaders--both existing and high potentials.

How Is DiSC Used?

Using DiSC is beneficial in all sorts of organizations. It is often used in Fortune 500 companies, but just as much in very small organizations. Government departments and educational establishments use it, as do churches, consultants, facilitators and coaches. In fact, even individual people can find benefits by completing a DiSC Assessment. This is because it is so easy to understand and so effective in what it aims to achieve.  The DiSC Profiles are designed to be self-administered and self-interpreted for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of themselves. The person answering the questions (also called the respondent) is considered the expert on themselves and the instruments are self-scored and self-interpreted.  No other educational requirements are made. Certification is not needed to use the DiSC Profiles.

15 Top Uses For The DiSC Profile

DiSC Profiles can be built into self-study and classroom curricula.  Uses range from one-time offerings for building personal awareness to ongoing training in the areas mentioned above. DiSC Profiles can really help your group communicate better and focus on the issues rather than personality conflicts.  One of the greatest benefits of DiSC Profiles is a common language for talking about feelings, thoughts and behavior in language that is nonjudgmental—describing what is, not what should be.  Group understanding fosters cooperation, acceptance and trust—the keys to top performance.  Through DiSC, you can learn how to build totally productive teams, who work in harmony with each other. Those at the top end, the managers, the leaders and supervisors, learn how to be more effective at their jobs.

DiSC Profiles allow you to train a sales force that delivers real results and at the same time hugely improve your customer service levels. Any frustrations and conflicts on interpersonal levels can be resolved quicker and may actually not happen anymore. Communication is improved across the board and this also helps when change and conflict has to be managed appropriately. Furthermore, through DiSC, there is a great respect about personal diversity and it recognizes that everybody is different and we learn how to value those differences. These differences are the strength of an organization. All of this allows productivity to be increased, which in turn has positive effects on meeting the company’s goals and the people within the organization, as they are able to see that their own efforts are paying off.

Counselors and coaches are also much better able to do their job, because they understand themselves but also the people they counsel or coach.  For years, consultants, coaches, and facilitators have used DiSC to help people recognize the occasional need to adapt their DiSC style to the people or situations around them. More and more frequently, DiSC Assessments are used as a standard tool by HR professionals.  In the recruitment process, DiSC makes it possible to get the right candidates for jobs, by providing insight into behavioral interviewing questions that helps to determine cultural fit.

The DiSC Profile does not precisely determine job fit, job fitness, or success; it does not measure a specific skill, aptitude, or factor specific to a position.  The association between an occupation and a given DiSC style is modest at best.  Most occupations contain a wide range of DiSC styles. DiSC gives insight into your preferences as well as the preferences of others.  It is a great instrument to increase your self-awareness and personal effectiveness when working or relating with others.  While the DiSC profile won’t limit individuals with respect to job fit, it will help individuals understand the work environments that are most/least comfortable for them, identify sources of their frustrations at work and find ways to maximize what motivates them.  This is equally beneficial when it comes to promoting people and determining whether there is a suitable place for them higher up in an organization.  An individual’s success does not correlate to any certain behavioral preferences or priorities.

In an increasingly sophisticated marketplace, however, companies often want to take DiSC even further. Organizations routinely use DiSC assessments and programs to improve critical people-skills in the areas of management, sales, leadership, communication, and more.

One of the reasons that the DiSC Model has been so successful over the years is because it gives people a simple, memorable way to understand themselves and those around them.  .  Individuals are more successful when they know themselves, understand others and can adapt to the needs of the situation.

How Are DiSC Profiles Priced?

As the old adage states, you get what you pay for.  This is certainly true with personality and behavioral style assessments.  Prices range from free to around a $200 depending on the type of assessment you are searching for.  Though the free versions are tempting to reach for, most of these are poor substitutes for the detailed research that has gone into the DiSC Profile.  Original DiSC Profiles from Intesi! come backed with the expert assistance from trained and experienced staff which includes a DiSC Certified Trainer, as well as all of the tools needed to utilize the profile system properly.

With the original DiSC Profile, you will have all of the tools, expertise and professional help needed for your entire organization to participate in the assessment process.  There is a reason 70% of Fortune 500 companies use the DiSC Profile and these reasons are glaringly evident when you compare our system with other less-authoritative and complicated versions currently on the market.

Some Additional Important Facts About DiSC Profiles

There are no meaningful differences in DiSC among traditionally defined ethnic groups.  Overall, age appears to have little relationship with DiSC styles. There is a slight tendency for older participants to have lower “i” scores.  Gender differences exist, but they are small.  Women show slightly higher scores on the “S” scale; men show slightly higher scores on the “D” scale.

Those who take a DiSC Assessment at different times and in different situations may notice that the feedback reflects differences in results based on the participant's perception of their own behavior in their current circumstances.  Although the vast majority of DiSC participants find that their results are similar between testings, there are a variety of reasons why your results could change from one assessment to another, life changes often being a significant cause.  Various personal factors such as mood, energy level, health, mental state and distractibility of the participant when taking the test must be considered because they all influence how a person responds to the questions.  Because DiSC is a self-assessment, your results depend on how you see yourself and the world around you during the assessment period. So, consider whether your mood might have been a factor, or whether you experienced any major life changes between assessments.
