Real Business SuccessNo Magical Recipe For Success

If you have a business, you will want it to be a success.  However, actually achieving this is really hard and many of us don’t know where to start.

What is success?  And why is it that some companies seem to grow and grow and become conglomerates like Virgin, whereas others seem to work equally hard and have the same passion, but go bust?  There is no magical recipe for success, but there are a number of things that you can do and look for in your own company to increase your chances.  Let’s take a look.

Be Passionate

Your business will never succeed if you don’t have the necessary passion.

Even if, for whatever reason, you struggle to be passionate about the company, try to find the passion for the benefits it offers.  This could be anything that matters to you, such as the money or the status or simply the fact that you can show others that you have succeeded.  You cannot expect others to believe in your company, be that your employees, your customers or your partners, if you don’t believe in it yourself.

Leadership and Management

Wherever we look, we hear about companies that have too many managers.  They have meetings just to have meetings, and there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians.  However, this doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any leadership and management, but rather that you get your management right.

“Get out there, listen to people, draw people out and learn from them.  As a leader you’ve also got to be extremely good at praising people.  Never openly criticize people; never lose your temper, and always lavish praise on your colleagues for a job well done.”  Richard Branson: Five Secrets to Business Success

These are but a few of the characteristics of a good manager, but it does demonstrate just how important they are.  Managers who lead by example inspire others to do better.  They make it possible for people to actually want to work for the company and help it achieve the success that we are all after.  Learn More about Everything DiSC Work of Leaders to get the most out of your leaders and managers.  The Work of Leaders Profile energizes leaders and managers to comprehend their particular leadership characteristics and the way they affect their particular performance. Accept Change

The world is not stagnant and you can only keep up if you are ready to change with it.  This is hard, because it is in our very nature to resist change.  We think something works, or is at least comfortable, and we refuse to try out other things, because that is risky and simply doesn’t feel right.  However, unless you are adaptable and ready to change, your business will become stagnant.

“Business success requires the ability to adapt to changing situations.  Using the habit of adaptability allows business owners to respond to circumstances with the ability to change course and act without complete information.  Being flexible allows us to respond to changes without being paralyzed with fear and uncertainty.”  7 Habits of Business Success

Adapt or Die

The element of change is probably the most important of all.  Not only must you be ready to adapt when something happens, you also have to be proactive and change things before something catastrophic happens.  You should always educate yourself on things that are out there, look into new technologies and study any processes that are being developed.  Could any of these help your business grow or make your company more productive, for instance?  At the same time, you have to be willing to change yourself.  Hence, in order for your business to be a success, you need to make sure that you look inside yourself to see what you can change about yourself to increase your level of success.
