What is DiSC?What is DiSC?

DiSC describes how people behave as they respond to their environment.  It gives valuable insight into one's own behavior as well as the behavior of others.   DiSC Profile Products are self-administered, self-scoring and self-interpreted productivity improvement solutions designed to help adults understand themselves and others.

It is one of the most successful and widely used personal and professional development instruments providing the leading edge approach to improve self-awareness, relationships, performance, productivity, communication, teamwork, and leadership.  DiSC Profile Products and the DiSC Personality Tests are based on the 1928 publication of psychologist William Moulton Marston, The Emotions of Normal People.

Who is William Moulton Marston?

Behavior vs. PersonalityThe Great Debate: Behavior vs. Personality
This debate over the role of behavior vs. personality in how an individual responds to situations can be summarized in two questions:
  • Is people's behavior best explained by the circumstances and situation they find themselves in, or by their personality, which guides behavior no matter what the situation is?
  • Does the personality of an individual transcend the immediate situation and moment to provide a consistent guide to his or her actions or is what a person does completely dependent upon the situation he or she is in at the time?

For Example: if you were placed on the sport field or in military combat, you would probably behave more aggressively than normal.  In fact, even quite passive and submissive people become aggressive given sufficient provocation.  This suggests that behavior may be explained by understanding not only the personality, but also how we react to the environment and its circumstances.  We term this emphasis on the role of situational circumstances, a "situational" view of personality.

The question provoked by the situation vs. person debate is to what extent which behavior can be predicted by personality vs. the extent to which that behavior arises from the dynamics of the situation and to what extent from the inherent characteristics of the person themselves.
In other words, what drives behavior: personality or the interpretation of the situation.

The Person vs. Situation Debate
It
has been a hotly contested topic since the late 1960's.  Perhaps not surprisingly, the answer is that behavior is best understood as both situation and person.  Thus, as with the nature vs. nurture debate, we may be better off studying the interaction more closely, to better understand the phenomena of human behavior and experience.

Behavior = Personality x Interpretation of the Situation
Mischel (1968) sparks personality vs. situation debate.  In 1968, Walter Mischel challenged the assumption that personality determined behavior, and instead claimed that people's behavior from situation to situation was variable and depended on the situational circumstances.  In other words, the "situation" view is that behavior depends on the situation itself, whereas the personality view is that behavior depends on long-held characteristic personality styles and is consistently displayed no matter the situation.

The Personality-Situation Relationship
It is vital to appreciate that there are individual differences in this relationship.

HIGH Self-Monitors, those who understand their behavioral tendencies, display a higher ability to adapt their natural behavior to the situation creating a higher level of effectiveness and productivity in their lives and careers.

LOW Self-Monitors
, those who do not understand their behavioral tendencies, display a lower ability to adapt their natural behavior to the situation simply because they are unaware of their behavioral tendencies risk misunderstanding and decreased effectiveness.

In Summary
Awareness of your behavioral tendencies, and the tendencies of others, through the use of DiSC Products, DiSC Profiles, DiSC Assessments, and DiSC Personality Tests give you and your organizational teams a competitive edge.

DiSC IS NOT A TEST

There are NO  "Right" or "Wrong" Answers

You CANNOT  "Pass" or "Fail"

DiSC Profiles, DiSC Assessments, and the DiSC Personality Test creates understanding of self and others.

What you will do is Learn about Yourself and Others.
Actually DiSC is SO MUCH MORE than just Personality:
revealing your behavioral tendencies under certain situations--How you and others tend to behave under stress, in a team, when in conflict, when communicating, when fearful, when avoiding certain activities, when problem-solving, etc.  DiSC is not only a personality test, but the resulting report also shows your strengths, weaknesses, motivations, behavioral tendencies, and strategies to increase your daily effectiveness in your personal life and career pursuits.

One of the greatest benefits of DiSC productivity improvement solutions is the development and use of a common language for talking about feelings, thoughts and behavior in a language that is objective and nonjudgmental--describing what is, not what should be.

DiSC Profile Products can help your group communicate better and focus on issues rather than personality conflicts.

The Essence of DiSC using DiSC Profiles, DiSC Assessments, and DiSC Personality Tests.
The Essence of DiSC
The DiSC Dimensions of Behavior model describes behavioral patterns in terms of four major tendencies.  They are briefly described below:

Dominance "D"

People with high "D" scores often exhibit behavior like being very active in dealing with problems and challenges.  Low "D" scores are people who often exhibit behavior like wanting to gather more data before committing to any decision.  High "D" people are described as risk-taker, forceful, demanding, domineering, daring, direct, and egocentric.  Low "D" people are described as conservative, peaceful, mild, quiet, unsure, dependent, and modest.

Influence "i"
People with high "i" scores often exhibit behavior like attempting to influence others through talking and activity, and tending to be more emotional.  Low "i" scores are people who often exhibit behavior like having their decisions influenced more by facts and data, and not with feelings.  High "i" people are described as trusting, self-promoting, emotional, impulsive, persuasive, gregarious, and enthusiastic.  Low "i" people are described as retiring, suspicious, pessimistic, aloof, withdrawn, self-conscious, and reticent.

Steadiness "S"
People with high "S" scores often exhibit behavior like wanting a steady pace, security, and avoiding sudden changes.  Low "S" scores are people who often exhibit behavior like seeking variety, change, and challenges.  High "S" people are described as possessive, serene, team-oriented, predictable, loyal, patient, and passive.  Low "S" people are described as impetuous, restless, change-oriented, fault-finding, spontaneous, frustrated by the status quo, and active.

Conscientiousness "C"
People with high "C" scores often exhibit behavior like adhering to rules, regulations, structure, and seeking to do quality work and doing it right the first time.  Low "C" scores are people who often exhibit behavior like challenging the rules, taking authority, and seeking independence.  High "C" people are described as courteous, conventional, systematic, diplomatic, fact-finders, accurate, and perfectionists.  Low "C" people are described as stubborn, arbitrary, rebellious, defiant, obstinate, tactless, and sarcastic.

DiSC Dimensions of Behavior

We all have our strengths that make us unique and valuable.  However, our strengths when overused or used inappropriately, can become weaknesses.  DiSC productivity improvement solutions and DiSC Profile Products focus not only on helping people identify their strengths and their limitations, but also how to develop specific action plans to increase their value and effectiveness.
