CLIENT: Non-profit board of directors and its staff.
BUSINESS NEED: The organization struggled with issues due to a lack of role clarity and confusion regarding the operations of the board of directors and the staff. During the leadership retreat a climate of teamwork was created between the board and the staff.
SOLUTION: Elevate the group's Emotional Intelligence and reduce confusion by clarifying roles.
These products were used: DiSC Classic, the Team Dimensions Profile.
DELIVERY METHOD: DiSC was used at the onset to build empathy and awareness of the participants' prevailing attitudes. DiSC created a common and objective language for the group, helping participants express their own views and understand the perspectives of others. After personal connections were established on the first day, conversation ensued about strategic goals. The Team Dimensions Profile was introduced on the second day to help people understand their preferred roles on a team and to follow up on those strategic discussions. The idea was to give people an objective framework for discussing synergistic effects of an interactive, balanced team.
RESULTS: The instruments worked as expected. Essentially, DiSC enabled people to open themselves up to others in a constructive way. Further, they were able to see others from a fresh perspective. The combination enabled openness and open-mindedness. The composite presentation of DiSC was particularly useful (the full DiSC PPSS report was used). The Team Dimensions Profile provided a nice transition from strategic conversations to action planning. The conversation was moved from large strategic issues to discussions about matching individual strengths to tasks and responsibilities. Moving from the conceptual enabled deeper personal commitments to what was developed during the two-day session. The effects of the instruments are still felt in the organization. The Z-process is less visible, but it was a pivotal tool during the retreat for moving from discussions and contemplation to personal involvement, contributions, accountability, and responsibility.
