How To Develop Excellent Leaders

Deliver SuccessGreat Leaders Deliver Success

Having excellent leaders in an organization is vital to its success.  It is possible to hire people that are excellent leaders.  And while some people are natural born leaders, it is also important to develop people within your organization to become leaders, allowing them to progress through the ranks.

So how do you develop an excellent leader?  What are the skills that should be worked on?

TrustInspiring Trust

A leader inspires other people to trust them.  This is a soft skill, which means it is not something that can be learned by reading a textbook.  However, this doesn’t mean it isn’t something that can’t be learned.  In fact, by giving people training in confidence and assertiveness you will already be well on the way towards developing this particular skill.

“You show others that you believe in their capacity to live up to certain expectations, to deliver on promises, and to achieve clarity on key goals.  You don’t inspire trust by micromanaging and second guessing every step people make.”  The Leader Formula: The 4 things that make a good leader

Listening and CommunicationExcellent Listening and Communication Skills

Great leaders are great communicators, but also excellent listeners.  They are able to listen emphatically to others, allowing them to have their say.  However, they also hear the things that aren’t being said.  Additionally, they communicate in the same way, using not just words but also their body language.  Being a great communicator is vital to excellent leadership.

“Good leaders should express sincere care and concern for the members of their group both verbally and non-verbally.  By keeping the lines of communication open, these leaders can ensure that group members feel able to make contributions and receive recognition for their achievements.”  10 Ways to Become a Better Leader

DisciplineDiscipline

Discipline is sometimes seen as a dirty word.  It implies control and dictatorship.  However, this idea needs to be reviewed.  Leaders have to be able to discipline others.  In the best case scenario, discipline never has to be exercised because leaders have the ability to inspire others to behave the way they should.  However, if something does go wrong, they should be able to bring things back on track, and they need to know how to exercise discipline in the right way.

“To be a good leader, you need to be self-disciplined and make sure others on your team are disciplined.”

HonestyHonesty

Another incredibly important skill is to have honesty.  This is another soft skill and it seems that it has been one of the hardest ones to pick up.  It is believed that this is because we have come from a culture where the boss was always right, and where people were being walked over in order for some people to reach the top.  Honesty was definitely something that wasn’t looked for.  However, we now understand how important and beneficial it is for an organization to have engaged employees, and this can only be achieved if a leader is honest in his or her intentions.  Again, this boils back down to trust, which can only be reached if a leader is honest.

“Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher.  Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.”  Top 10 Qualities That Make A Great Leader

In Conclusion

Developing the above skills is a great way to become an excellent leader.  The days of believing that all leaders were born that way are long gone and we now understand that it is about far more than just personality.  The skills required to be a great leader can all be learned, so long as people know what their own strengths are but can also recognize where they may require additional support.
