A Peek At Different Leadership Styles

Leadership StylesLeadership

Though many people have one idea of leadership, it presents in many different styles. There is not any one singular type of leadership, since all leaders must develop a style that’s consistent with their personality and what they would like to accomplish.

The setting or situation also determines the type of leader expected like a group of school children requires a leader that is different from a group of soldiers heading off to combat. This article is going to go through the various leadership styles and what the advantages and disadvantages of each are.

Autocratic Leadership

One particular standard style of leadership is referred to as the autocratic style. This style is simply where a leader orders every person to do what they are told with no input from anybody else. An autocratic leader won’t put up with any dissent, and doesn’t even like individuals asking questions that suggest other options are possible. The autocratic style is not especially popular in any setting and often causes a revolt of some kind among the group. Autocratic leadership has its place but you’ll find it pretty much nonexistent in the business environment.

“Autocratic leaders can cause a real drop in the labor efficiency of their employees, if they donĀ“t know exactly how to deal with autocratic leadership and how to handle an autocratic boss.” How to Deal with Autocratic Leadership

Laissez Faire Leadership

The Laissez Faire style of leadership is the complete opposite of the autocratic style, because it truly is permissive and hands off in its basic strategy. A laissez faire style leader will pass a task to people and allow them to approach it in their own way. This will work if the individuals under the leader are quite smart and highly motivated. This also works in family businesses and in skunk work sort of projects. In large organizations, it can cause inefficiency and some people not carrying their weight. In fact, many people need a certain amount of direction to focus properly and it can be a mistake to believe that everyone is prepared to take responsibility and think for themselves.

“Laissez-faire leadership, also known as delegative leadership, is a type of leadership style in which leaders are hands-off and allow group members to make the decisions. Researchers have found that this is generally the leadership style that leads to the lowest productivity among group members.” What Is Laissez-Faire Leadership?

Charismatic Leadership

One other leadership style is the charismatic style where the leader’s unique character is key to leading a group. The media loves focusing on charismatic leaders, as they make for interesting stories. The charismatic leader has a way of getting others to react positively to doing a specific job. Nonetheless, not everyone is can be charismatic and it’s something that can’t be taught. There can be circumstances where the charismatic leader may have made errors in judgment but people will ignore it because of his or her personality. If the leader is charismatic but is lacking in business sense, it may result in problems later on.

“Displaying charismatic leadership is one of the most effective ways to boost everything from motivation and creativity to productivity and plain old satisfaction. Whether it stems from low morale at the office, high anxiety at home, or a lack of clear direction from the top, far too many employees feel like they’re stuck in a boat without a paddle. It’s the manager’s job to get those employees rowing again. But what if you fall somewhere between Ben Stein and Alan Greenspan on the charisma scale?” Five Secrets of Charismatic Leadership
